Diablo Valley College is expanding opportunities for student-athletes by introducing women’s flag football as both an emerging sport and a new academic course. The class is instructed by Beau Tagaloa, who also serves as the program’s head coach, creating a direct pathway between classroom learning and on-field development.
Flag football’s addition at DVC aligns with the recent decision by the NCAA to include the sport in its Emerging Sports for Women program. This designation is designed to expand participation opportunities, increase equity in athletics, and help new sports grow toward eventual NCAA championship status. To reach that level, at least 40 NCAA schools must sponsor the sport at the varsity level—a benchmark flag football is quickly approaching due to its rapid national growth.
The sport has gained significant momentum across youth, high school, and collegiate levels and is set to debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics, further highlighting its rising prominence. By offering both a course and competitive opportunities, DVC is positioning itself at the forefront of this growth—providing students with access to a fast-paced, inclusive sport while supporting the broader movement to expand women’s athletics.
