Swimming Posts Strong Showing at Big 8 Championships with Men 3rd and Women 4th
The Big 8 Championship in Sacramento saw Diablo Valley College men deliver a strong all-around performance, finishing 3rd overall with 697 points while showcasing impressive depth and momentum across the three-day meet. The Vikings were led by standout efforts from Daniel Lewis, who dominated the distance and IM events with victories in the 400 IM and 100 IM while also adding runner-up finishes in the 500 free, highlighting one of the top point contributions of the meet. Sprinting was anchored by Ray Fitch, who captured the 50 free and 100 fly titles and added a 3rd-place finish in the 100 free, consistently scoring at a high level. Donovan Swann contributed across multiple events with a 2nd-place finish in the 100 IM and additional top-five swims in the 50 free and 100 breast, while Joe Greer added valuable sprint points with a 3rd-place finish in the 100 free and a 4th in the 50 free. In the breaststroke group, Massimo Trento stood out with a win in the 200 breast and a 2nd-place finish in the same event along with a 4th in the 100 breast. Additional key top-five finishes came from Evan Sonoda (3rd, 400 IM; 5th, 500 free), Isaiah Warner (3rd, 100 back; 4th, 100 fly), and Petros Lewis (2nd and 3rd, 200 fly), underscoring the team's depth. With 71% lifetime bests and numerous podium performances, DVC combined high-end scoring with strong overall improvements to secure their third-place finish.
The Diablo Valley College women turned in a strong showing at the Big 8 Conference Championships in Sacramento, finishing 4th overall with 570 points and producing several standout performances at the top of the meet. Evalinne Vecchio led the way with a dominant championship effort, winning the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 back to account for three event titles and major points for DVC. Mia DeLuca also delivered in a big way, capturing the 200 breast title while adding 3rd-place finishes in both the 50 free and 100 breast. Frida Avalos Paz was another major contributor, posting runner-up finishes in the 100 IM and 200 IM, adding a 3rd in the 400 IM, and also winning the 200 IM to give the Vikings another event championship. DVC's depth showed through in several other top-five swims, including Regan Braga's 3rd-place finish in the 100 free, Chloe Pappas placing 4th in the 200 free and 5th in the 100 free, Izzy Cooley taking 4th and 5th in the 200 free, Supitcha Phoonpirom finishing 5th in the 200 back, and Brianna Smyth earning 3rd in the 100 fly. With multiple event wins, a strong collection of podium finishes, and 29 personal bests on the weekend, the women put together an impressive championship meet built on both high-end performances and team depth.
