No. 8 Vikings secure 23–20 victory over Laney, move to 8-1
OAKLAND, Calif. — Diablo Valley College edged Laney College 23–20 on Friday night at Laney Stadium with a comeback win, improving to 8–1 (3–1 in the Bay 6). The Vikings sealed the victory on the final play, as kicker Daniel Soccol drilled a 27-yard field goal as time expired.
Laney jumped out early, taking a 10–0 lead midway through the second quarter behind a 41-yard field goal and a 3-yard TD run by Marcus Jones. DVC responded quickly, with Jayden Macedo punching in a 6-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 10–7. After another Laney field goal, the Vikings headed into halftime trailing 13–7.
The momentum shifted out of the break. DVC opened the third quarter with a five-play, 57-yard drive capped by a 5-yard rushing touchdown from Ferrari Miller, taking its first lead of the night at 14–13. Soccol added a 21-yard field goal later in the quarter to stretch the advantage to 17–13.
Laney answered in the fourth, driving 95 yards for a go-ahead 3-yard TD by Estevan Duarte, reclaiming a 20–17 lead with 5:48 remaining. DVC responded with an 11-play drive ending in a 30-yard Soccol field goal to tie the game at 20–20 with just over two minutes left.
After a defensive stop, the Vikings marched again, setting up Soccol's third made field goal of the night—this one from 27 yards—to secure the win at the buzzer.
